Durrës – Rrogozhinë Railway, financing secured - EBRD approves 30 million euro loan, project has total cost of 120.5 million euro
The Durrës - Rrogozhina railway line is entering a new phase of development. The project for its rehabilitation has already secured the approval of a 30 million euro loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, completing the financial package of 120.5 million euros together with 90 million euros from the European Investment Bank.
After prior approval by the Albanian government, the agreement with the EIB was signed in Tirana in April of this year. Meanwhile, the approval of the 30 million euro loan from the EBRD was finalized on June 11.
The 34-kilometer railway segment, from the port of Durres to Rrogozhina, will be rehabilitated, modernized and electrified to align with European Union standards. The line has not undergone any full reconstruction to date and is in a depreciated state.
The project is part of the VIII railway corridor, a strategic axis connecting Italian ports with Durrës, North Macedonia and Bulgaria, serving not only for the movement of passengers and goods, but also as a key route for military mobility in Southeast Europe.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, has described this investment as an important step for Albania's stronger connection with the European Union and for increasing regional security.
Once completed, trains on this line will travel at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour. From an environmental perspective, the shift of traffic from roads to railways is expected to significantly reduce pollution and bring benefits in efficiency, safety and reduced carbon emissions.
