Albanians "flock" to the sea / Record boat imports. Italy, Britain and Greece top the list of suppliers
The month of May 2025 marked a historic record in the import of ships, boats and floating structures into Albania, with a total amount of 330.6 million lek, the highest level ever recorded for this category in the month of May in years.
This is an indicator of major movements in the maritime sector, which is often linked to investments in the naval fleet, increased tourist activity or developments in port infrastructure. But the most interesting thing lies in the origin of these vessels, from which countries they came to us and what does this indicate about our economic and geostrategic orientation?
At the top of the list is Italy, with over 115 million lekë, confirming its traditional role as the main supplier of the Albanian market for floating vehicles. Next comes the United Kingdom with nearly 86 million lekë, followed by Greece with 77 million lekë, which together make up the bulk of this record. An interesting novelty this month is Mexico, which ranks fourth, leaving behind more common countries in Albanian trade such as China, France or the USA.
Although the amounts for other countries are more modest, the list is extensive and includes unusual names such as Panama, Japan, Norway, Slovenia or Switzerland, which indicates a significant diversification of import sources. This variety of origins, combined with the strong monthly growth, makes May a month signaling new rhythms in the development of the maritime sector in Albania. What until yesterday was a narrow category with little fluctuation, today appears as a dynamic reflection of new needs and aspirations for the sea.
In a country with a long coastline and an increasingly busy tourist season, these data are not just numbers, but are a direct indicator of the direction the economy is taking. Albania is investing more in tourism and everything related to it.
