Durrës-Rrogozhina railway project - Extension of the track, 4 new stations and reconstruction of the 380 m long tunnel
Efforts to secure funds for the rehabilitation of the Durrës-Rrogozhina railway line have been underway for several years, while the Environmental Impact Assessment, a document that also provides details of the project, was completed in November 2020.
According to him, the project for the rehabilitation of this segment, with a length of about 34 km, includes the expansion of the railway track, the construction of bridges from scratch in accordance with the seismic and geological conditions of the area, as well as the demolition and reconstruction of the 380-meter-long Rrogozhina tunnel. Also, new stations will be built in Golem, Kavajë, Lekaj and Rrogozhina, equipped with signaling systems and comfortable for passengers.
The interventions will also include the installation of new security systems at level crossings, the closure of unauthorized crossings, and the construction of secondary roads to guarantee local traffic. The entire route will be surrounded by a protective fence, while automatic barriers and security cameras will be installed at the remaining crossings.
Another technical element is the rehabilitation of the Shkozet triangle, which will allow trains coming from the south and Elbasan to pass northwards without entering Durrës station, significantly improving the efficiency of the movement of goods and passengers across the network.
From an environmental perspective, the project is accompanied by a detailed assessment of the impact on the landscape, flooding, noise pollution and habitat protection. The aim is to build a modern, safe and sustainable railway for the coming decades, as well as to help the country meet its objectives for a green transport system integrated with the European network.
