As one of the criteria set by the European Union for Albania's membership is the digitization of education in the country.

During the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Policy, there was a discussion about the draft law regarding "Smart Labs", which aims to digitize teaching in Albania.

Klodiana Spahiu, Deputy of SP:

"This project is very important for the country, as we are talking about technological development in education. So far, about 200 schools in the country have been digitized, and now with the third phase we expect to implement it in another 600 schools. This project is not only for Albania, but is spread throughout Europe."

Regarding the financing of this project, most of it will be a low-interest loan from the Development Bank of the Council of Europe, accompanied by a grant and a cost from the state budget.

Kesjana Halili, Director of the Debt Directorate, Ministry of Finance:

"The loan from the Bank of the Council of Europe is worth 27 million euros, which will be accompanied by a grant from Western Balkan Investments worth 10 million euros, while the cost from the state budget will be 4 million euros. So, the total cost will be 41 million euros. The project will be spread over 3 phases, and now we are talking about the third phase of financing the project. The end of the project is predicted at the end of 2028."

The digitization of education with "Smart Labs" is not only being extended to Albania, but also to other countries of the Western Balkans, having a greater approach to the technological development that is taking place in the most developed countries.
