32 cyber incidents during 2024 - AKSK: Fewer attacks than in the previous year.

During the past year, the National Cyber Security Authority has identified, addressed and managed 32 cyber incidents, taking measures to neutralize threats and protect critical infrastructures. In 2024, fewer incidents resulted than in 2023, where there were 49 reports of cyber incidents from Critical and Important Information Infrastructures, 12 of which were serious incidents.

According to the National Cyber Security Authority, the most frequent type of attack was DDoS, specifically 17 cases, with the aim of disrupting services and overloading systems. DDoS is a network attack, the aim of which is to take down a website or network for a period of time, by loading it with excessive traffic and making its service unavailable.

On the other hand, 6 cases result in Domain Impersonation, i.e. attempts to imitate and damage the identity of critical institutions.

About 5 attacks were recorded as Phishing, which involves persistent techniques to deceive users and gain unauthorized access. Phishing is an attempt where malicious cyber actors use manipulative and deceptive techniques to steal important information such as passwords, financial information or personal data. Attackers disguise themselves as a trustworthy entity to trick users into sharing their information.

Meanwhile, Ransomware and Wiper attacks result in 3 and 1 cases respectively, attacks aimed at encrypting or deleting data with the aim of destroying infrastructures. In other words, Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts files and holds them hostage until individuals provide sensitive information or a ransom is paid to the attacker. While Wiper refers to the deletion of data.

Critical information infrastructure includes the entirety of information networks and systems, owned by a public or private authority, that provide services, the disruption or destruction of which would have a serious impact on the health, safety, economic well-being of citizens and the effective functioning of the economy in Albania.

The National Cyber Security Authority states that proactive incident management and improved defense capabilities are essential for addressing cyber threats and ensuring the security of critical systems.
