1.4 million undeclared euros seized at the border - 40 cases recorded in 2024. Kakavija leads attempts at illegal crossing
The crossing of large amounts of physical cash across the border without declaring them in accordance with applicable law continues to be a phenomenon present in Albania.
According to official data from the General Directorate of Customs, 40 cases of cash seizure/non-declaration were recorded for 2024, of which 23 cases were inbound and 17 cases were outbound.
The euro, just like in 2023, has led both in inflows and outflows this year, having the highest percentage of undeclared transactions compared to other currencies. The GBP is in second place, followed by the USD.
Specifically, approximately 1.4 million euros were seized undeclared, of which over 1 million were entering and the rest were leaving. There were also 221 thousand pounds that attempted to enter Albania undeclared.
The highest number of cash undeclared goods belongs to the Kakavija customs branch with 11 cases, followed by the Morina customs branch with 9 cases, Rinas with 8 cases, Durrës with 6 cases, Kapshtica with 3 cases, Muriqan with 2 cases and Vlorë with 1 case. The Kakavija customs branch also leads in the number of seized currency.
During 2024, the total number of cash declarations at the border is 2384 declarations.
Official data from the General Directorate of Customs shows that of this total, 1139 declarations were made by banks, 1205 declarations by individuals/entities and 40 seizures/non-declarations.
According to the law in force, "any person who enters/or leaves the territory of the Republic of Albania is obliged to declare amounts in cash, any type of bearer negotiable instrument, precious metals or stones, valuables and antique objects, starting from the amount of 10,000 euros or its equivalent in other currencies, the purpose of their holding, as well as to present relevant supporting documents.
