Germans demand return of nuclear power - Government is considering options, but

A new poll published by marketing company Innofact found that 55% of Germans were in favor of bringing back nuclear power.

The issue of nuclear energy has long troubled German politics and has been a sticking point in current coalition negotiations between Friedrich Merz's conservative CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democrats (SPD).

Survey results

In addition to the 55% of citizens who were in favor, 36% said they opposed the return of nuclear power and 9% were undecided.

More than six in ten men favored a return, while less than half of women were in favor of the decision. The poll reflected geographical differences, with the idea being more popular in southern and eastern Germany than in the north and west.

A total of 22% said that only recently closed reactors should be brought back into use and 32% said that new reactors should be built.

The survey found that 57% of respondents were in favor of continuing investment in other forms of renewable energy, with only 17% opposed and the rest undecided.

The pollsters surveyed 1,007 Germans in March 2025 and received responses from individuals aged 18 to 79.

What can the new government do?

At the moment, the CDU/CSU bloc is examining "whether a return to service for recently deactivated nuclear reactors would be technically and financially feasible, taking into account their current individual situation."

The SPD says it is not interested in bringing nuclear power plants back into use. The Greens also spoke out against a policy change.

But this oscillation has not been absent in the past, with the SPD-Green coalition led by Gerhard Schröder deciding to abandon nuclear energy in 1998, but Angela Merkel's government significantly extended their life in 2009.

A major turnaround was initiated by Merkel herself, who, in a surprise move, changed policy immediately after the Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster in Japan in 2011, accelerating their closure.

After their operations were temporarily extended by Olaf Scholz's SPD/Greens/FDP coalition government, Germany's last nuclear power plants were decommissioned in early 2023.
