“100 lek/liter fuel compensation” - Transport associations:

The reactivation of the support scheme, through the 100 lek/liter compensation, is one of the measures being considered by the government to support the public transport sector, which has been affected by the increase in fuel prices. The Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaçi, announced that several options are being considered, also based on the requests made by the associations.

"Such an element is being discussed again, despite the fact that we are still in its early stages, but we approved it in 2022. We approved it after several months that the price had increased and at a much higher level than it currently is. But it is among those elements that we are taking into consideration, along with other proposals that of course the transport association... we have left to sit down with them again in the coming days, as it is among those elements that we are looking at at a special level ," said Karakaçi.

In addition to the reinstatement of the 2022 scheme, public transport associations have also requested the abolition of excise duty, a reduction in VAT, and a review of the circulation tax, in case the situation worsens.

"In the concept of the circulation tax, the circulation tax itself is a demotivating tax, or the more, as the minister herself said, the more you circulate, the more you will pay. But in this specific case, in the case of public transport, we cannot be demotivated or reduce the means because there is a tax on the price of fuel," says Kostandin Foni, from the National Association of Urban Transport.

Meanwhile, regarding the price of fuel for citizens, Karakaçi said that the decision to reduce excise duty by 20% if the price increases above 220 lek/liter is at a very advanced stage and its evaluation and review is awaited.
