India begins population and housing census - Estimates put population at over 1.4 billion

India, the world's most populous nation, will spend a year conducting its long-delayed census, after a six-year delay caused by disruptions created in part by the COVID-19 pandemic. The once-a-decade population survey, originally scheduled for 2021, began on Wednesday (April 1) with a short deadline for citizens to register online, according to the government.
More than 3 million officials will be involved in the mammoth task, carried out in 36 states and federal territories, 7,092 sub-districts, 5,128 statutory cities, 4,580 census towns and about 639,902 villages, according to previous census data.
There will be two phases of physical door-to-door surveys. The first will list houses and housing conditions, the second - residents and their economic and social parameters, a census official said. With a population of more than 1.4 billion, India will surpass China in 2023, according to the United Nations Population Fund.
Analysts and economists do not see the size of India's population as cause for alarm. The government has long touted its largely young population as an opportunity to create a large pool of skilled workers at a time when many major economies are grappling with shrinking and aging workforces.
Accurate census data is essential for effective policymaking in India, especially for infrastructure planning, said economist and founder of Research Group Nikore Associates, Mitali Nikore.
The census is expected to be completed next March. Narayan said several sets of data from the census, recorded digitally for the first time, will be released soon after that.
