US warns North Macedonia - "Corruption and complex regulations deter investors"

North Macedonia continues to attract interest from American investors, but regulatory complexity, frequent legal changes, and persistent corruption still pose major obstacles for foreign companies, according to the latest statement from the US State Department on the country's investment climate.
“The overall regulatory environment remains complex, and frequent changes in laws and regulations, combined with their inconsistent interpretation, create an unpredictable business climate that fosters corruption,” the report explains.
According to the State Department, the country generally enforces the law, but there are numerous reports of officials continuing to engage in corrupt practices.
Although the government has made several announcements to encourage new investments, concrete efforts during 2024 have been limited. Attention has focused more on energy efficiency measures, financial support for families in need, and easing inflationary pressures.
Despite these challenges, North Macedonia aims to attract foreign investment in strategic sectors such as digitalization and green energy. Its geographical position at the intersection of Corridors VIII and X offers logistical advantages to companies looking to bring production closer to European markets.
