Serbia to buy more gas from Russia/ Will sign a 3-year agreement in October

Serbia will sign a three-year gas import agreement with Russia next month, ensuring an annual supply of 2.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, the head of the state gas company said.

Dusan Bajatovic of Srbijagas said that Serbia has already arranged daily supplies of 2.5 million cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan and receives an additional 9.5 million cubic meters daily from Russia.

Bajatovic added that Serbia's only gas storage facility holds 780 million cubic meters of natural gas, with an option for an additional 200 million cubic meters to be supplied from a storage facility in Hungary if necessary.

Serbia remains one of the few buyers of Russian natural gas in Europe, even as it seeks membership in the European Union.

The government has faced pressure from Western countries to comply with EU sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, but has yet to take action.

The country's oil monopoly, NIS, which is largely owned by Russia's Gazprom Neft, is seeking a seventh exemption to defer US sanctions that would jeopardize its crude oil supply.

A day ago, President Aleksandar Vučić met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where they discussed, among other things, tariffs and sanctions against NIS.
