Albania signs agreement with prestigious studio LUCA DINI Design & Architecture to draft maritime strategy
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy has signed a cooperation agreement with the prestigious architectural studio LUCA DINI Design & Architecture, to draft a maritime strategy for the country, with the aim of positioning Albania as a new and sustainable center in the Mediterranean yachting landscape.
The news was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, while she was present at the International Conference on Intelligent and Sustainable Marines, held in Monaco, where she was accompanied by renowned architect Luca Dini.
The guiding vision is to create a network of interconnected navies, collaborating rather than competing, sharing resources and infrastructure to increase logistical efficiency, foster regional economic development and reduce environmental impact. This innovative approach aligns with global priorities for competitiveness and sustainability in the maritime sector.
Albania offers unspoiled natural beauty, with pristine coastlines, beaches and anchorages that attract seasonal boating visitors. Its geographical proximity to the already established superyacht destinations of Greece and Montenegro makes Albania a new and attractive stop for experienced yacht users. With a growing tourism industry, increased curiosity from foreign visitors, and valuable lessons from neighboring Mediterranean countries, Albania is uniquely positioned for rapid development. Therefore, we believe that the next 15 years will provide a unique window of opportunity to position the country as a competitive destination.
But, without coordinated planning, marinas risk entering into unnecessary competition, losing their true value, so a synergistic approach that integrates tourism, urban development and infrastructure will be the key to success.
A master plan for the marina and yacht ecosystem presents a unique set of opportunities for Albania. By positioning itself as an attractive alternative to the increasingly congested Mediterranean hubs, Albania could attract a growing base of yachts and superyachts.
The development of new service facilities, including repair yards, yacht renewal stations and modern fueling areas, will strengthen Albania’s capacity to accommodate larger vessels and meet international standards.
At the same time, the construction of new marinas represents an opportunity to embrace modern principles of environmental and social sustainability, setting a new standard for responsible development in this sector.
Through specialization, each marina can develop its strengths, reducing pressure on existing infrastructure and improving overall efficiency.
The distribution of activities across several marinas also supports sustainability, limiting congestion, pollution and environmental impact. Strong intermodal connections with the road, rail and regional transport systems will enable smooth interactions between coastal and inland areas, reinforcing Albania’s role as a strategic maritime destination.
The Marina and Yacht Ecosystem concept is in harmony with wider European initiatives, such as the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), promoting integration with continental trade and logistics systems.
Through innovation, digital technologies and strategic planning, Albania has the opportunity to become not only a destination, but a strategic partner within the Mediterranean maritime network, with a world-class ecosystem in the yachting field, combining tradition, innovation and sustainability.
