Tirana Municipal Council dismisses Erion Veliaj with 50 votes from the majority and the opposition
The Tirana Municipal Council has dismissed Mayor Erion Veliaj from office with 50 votes. Socialist and Democratic councilors joined the votes for his dismissal.
The Chairperson of the Tirana Municipal Council, Megi Fino, praised the work of Mayor Veliaj, but said that his decision is binding due to the circumstances.
The Tirana Municipal Council voted to dismiss him for failing to report to duty for more than 3 months. Veliaj has been in detention since February 10, 2025, after his arrest by decision of the GJKKO at the request of SPAK, which has closed a file with 13 charges against him.
The decision of the Municipal Council is sent to the District Prefect, who forwards it to the Government where the final decision is made.
Meanwhile, the Socialists have their candidate, Ogerta Manastirliu, ready. Her candidacy was announced by Prime Minister Rama on the day the new government was presented. There is still no official rival from the opposition to Manastirliu.
