North Macedonia risks remaining with 500,000 inhabitants - State Statistical Office provides projections until 2070
North Macedonia is facing a deep demographic crisis, which experts are sounding the alarm about. The latest data published by the State Statistical Office show that in the first quarter of 2025 alone, 3,526 babies were born in the country, while 5,398 people died. This means that the number of births is falling, while the number of deaths is increasing, creating a natural decrease of 1,872 inhabitants.
But the situation becomes more complex when analyzing data on marriages, where the number has dropped by 25% compared to the same period in 2024.
According to projections by the Statistical Office, if this trend continues, the population could drop to just 500,000 by 2070. This figure, according to experts, completely threatens the future of the country and, according to them, urgent measures must be taken, as North Macedonia is emptying out.
The realization of the adopted hypotheses on fertility, mortality and migration, but also the so-called demographic inertia conditioned by inherited age structures, would also determine the future trends of the components of population movement, namely the dynamics of the number of live births, the number of deaths and the volume of the migration balance in the coming decades.
