January-June 2025, Kosovo emigrants sent 651 million euros - Over 21 million euros more than the same period last year
The Kosovo diaspora has sent back to their homeland over 651 million euros in the period January-June of this year. This value is over 21 million euros more, compared to the same period last year. The figure was published by the Central Bank of Kosovo.
Based on the comparisons, it results that the increase in remittances in recent years has been continuous. In the first half of 2023, emigrants sent approximately 633 million euros to Kosovo. Meanwhile, in the same period of 2022, the diaspora sent over 555 million euros.
According to economic experts, the increase in remittances is a great support in the conditions of the deteriorating economic situation of families in Kosovo. They say that diaspora remittances are vital for economic and social stability in Kosovo, but the problem is that the money that comes is spent mainly on consumption, on the purchase of goods and services, and not on productive investments.
Remittances continue to be an important pillar of Kosovo's economy, sustaining aggregate demand and ensuring the well-being of many families.
Experts also foresee risks from this increase in remittances. They ask what could happen if remittances fall? This would mean a decline in Kosovo's development level because they constitute an important part of economic growth. We must also think, experts say, about the fact that if these remittances fall, what will be the consequences for the Kosovo economy.
