EBRD, 29 million euros for the energy network in Kosovo - The project aims at digitalization and increasing capacity by 300 MW

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering providing a corporate loan of up to EUR 29 million to the Kosovo Transmission System and Market Operator (KOSTT). The loan aims to finance the rehabilitation and improvement of substations, transformers and electricity transmission lines, to strengthen the reliability of the high-voltage network.
The initiative also enables the increase of renewable energy capacities and the digitalization of the Market Operator's activities. The investment will be supported by a grant of 5 million euros from the Danish Cooperation Fund.
This project will significantly improve Kosovo's energy network, increasing its capacity by 300 MW, especially from renewable sources. It will enable the connection of planned green energy installations, which are currently not feasible due to grid constraints, and will reduce the risk of disruptions to existing installations. Furthermore, it will improve the functioning of the energy market through digitalization, facilitating electricity trade.
The project is in line with the EBRD's Kosovo Strategy, which emphasizes sustainable development of the energy sector. The rehabilitation of substations, replacement of transformers and transmission lines will improve energy efficiency and system reliability.
The System, Transmission and Market Operator is a joint-stock company fully owned by the Republic of Kosovo, and shareholder rights are exercised by the Ministry of Economic Development. The main tasks include the operation and maintenance of the electricity transmission system, as well as the management of the energy market.
