The fifth most visited country in the world - Around 58 million tourists traveled to Italy in 2025
Italy is currently the fifth most visited country in the world in 2025, with almost 58 million tourist arrivals, and is expected to soon climb to fourth place, according to the latest data from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
Preliminary estimates indicate that tourism's contribution to Italy's Gross Domestic Product for 2025 could reach 237.4 billion euros, supporting 3.2 million jobs in the sector. International tourist spending is also expected to exceed 60 billion euros, placing Italy among the six most important destinations in the world in terms of visitor spending, according to Italian media.
The country currently ranks behind France, Spain, the United States and Turkey as the most visited country in the world. But according to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Italy is close to overtaking Turkey to reach fourth place. Meloni made this statement during a global tourism summit held in Rome.
“With almost 58 million international arrivals, we are fifth in the world’s most visited countries, and we are poised to climb even higher,” she added. The Prime Minister stressed that these figures are evidence of good work, but warned that there is still much to be done.
“This is the first time that this summit is taking place in Italy, and I like to think that this is a recognition of the strength and prestige of our tourism sector, but also a confirmation of this government’s commitment to supporting one of the most valuable industries of the Italian economy. Tourism creates jobs, attracts investment and is an extraordinary source of wealth and well-being,” said Meloni, noting that the sector accounts for around 13% of Italy’s GDP.
