Croatia, towards nuclear energy - The government is drafting a special law to meet energy needs
Croatia's parliament is expected to approve a draft law on the construction of a nuclear power plant by the end of the year, the economy ministry said. The government has set up a working group that is drafting the law on nuclear energy.
For more than 40 years, Croatia has been a co-owner of the Krsko nuclear power plant in Slovenia, which supplies about 16% of the country's energy needs.
The ministry emphasized that the country needs this energy source, alongside renewable ones, as it helps stabilize the energy grid.
The Krsko plant, built in 1983, is expected to close in 2043. It is a pressurized water reactor and has a gross capacity of 730 megawatts, producing about 5,700 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year. The operator is jointly owned by the Slovenian company Gen Energija and the Croatian company HEP.
The ministry added that the European Union has allocated 240 billion euros for investments in nuclear energy within the framework of the multi-year budget, while the decision on the possible location of a new power plant will be made by experts.
If a political consensus is reached, the construction of the new plant in Croatia would take at least five to ten years. Earlier this year, the Slovenian Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning published an initiative planning the possible construction of a second reactor at the Krsko plant, with an estimated cost of up to 15.4 billion euros.
Croatia has not yet received an official offer from Slovenia for the new nuclear power plant, but is interested in becoming part of the project under the same conditions as the first plant.
The Krsko power plant will stop operating at the end of this month for a repair costing 100 million euros and is expected to resume production at the end of next month.
