"Made in Europe" defense investments - Germany plans 83 billion euros for weapons produced in the EU
Germany plans to spend up to 83 billion euros on weapons made in Europe, reducing its dependence on US defense systems. Chancellor Friedrich Merz aims to build “the most powerful army in Europe,” amid doubts about Washington’s credibility under Donald Trump.
According to reports, the German government plans 154 major military procurements between September 2025 and December 2026, with only 8% of them coming from American suppliers, a major shift from the previous dependence on the US military system.
The new decision follows demands by US President Trump that NATO partner countries increase defense spending to 5% of GDP and buy more American weapons. This has prompted Berlin to pursue a new strategy, buying European weapons.
Europe's dependence on US military equipment has increased significantly in recent years. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), US arms imports to Europe, including Ukraine, tripled between 2020 and 2024, compared to the previous five-year period.
For the first time in two decades, the majority of US arms exports went to Europe, up from 13% (2015–2019) to 35% (2020–2024). Overall, European NATO states doubled their arms imports during this period, with two-thirds coming from the US.
Germany saw a particularly large increase: its arms imports expanded by 334%, of which about 70% came from the United States.
The US also continued to expand its leading role in the global arms market. Exports increased by 21% between the two five-year periods, while its share of the global arms market expanded from 35% to 43%.
Now Berlin intends to follow a new path, in line with the motto "Buy European".
