Summer 2025, among the hottest in Spain - Extreme temperatures were driven by

The summer of 2025 is expected to rank as one of the two hottest ever recorded in Spain, almost equaling 2022. Both of these periods significantly exceed the historic summer of 2003.

During 2025, hot spells were much more frequent than cold spells. While March was noticeably cold and May was close to average, all other months were warm, very warm, or extremely warm. As a result, 2025 ranked as the second warmest year ever recorded for the January–August period, just behind 2024.

The temperature pattern this summer has been characterized by a prolonged period of above-average temperatures in June and early July, a cooler period at the end of the month, and then the strongest heat wave ever recorded in Spain, which hit in August.

This latest wave recorded a temperature anomaly of 4.6°C, according to preliminary data from AEMET. It beats the previous record set in July 2022, with an anomaly of 4.5°C. The wave lasted sixteen days, making the first period of August (August 1–20) the warmest since at least 1961. While the period August 8–17 was the hottest ten days ever recorded in the country.

The magnitude of this event becomes clearer when looking at historical data. Five of the 20 hottest periods on record belong to this latest heat wave, and 15 have occurred since 2022. Based on observed data and forecasts through August 31, this month is likely to rank among the four hottest Augusts on record. This continues a trend in which four of the five hottest Augusts have occurred in the past four years.

After the heatwave ended on August 18, Spain experienced a period of cooler than normal temperatures. However, they are expected to rise again in the coming days.

The average temperature in Spain has increased by 1.69°C between 1961 and 2024. Scientific data shows that heat waves are becoming longer, more widespread and more intense. Although the country has always experienced hot summers, recent years have seen increasingly frequent episodes of extreme temperatures during the day and at night.
