"Serbia's future in the EU" - President Vučić, ready for

Serbia and its government remain committed to dialogue, despite the protesters’ refusal to accept offers of public debate or early elections, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said. “This is not the first time I have called for an open conversation. I am ready to discuss publicly, because I believe that there is no alternative but conversation and dialogue,” he explained.

The series of protests across Serbia began in response to the accident in the northern city of Novi Sad in November 2024, when the roof of a train station collapsed, killing 16 people. “This situation is not good for Serbia at all, to attract new investments or tourists,” the Serbian leader said.

Despite accusations of excessive use of force by the police and damage to property, Vučić supported the troops, saying they acted calmly, even in the face of direct threats from protesters. “The reaction of the Serbian police, compared to the forces of large EU countries, is almost incomparable,” the president explained.

"But, leaving that aside, of course there is corruption in the country, just like everywhere, and we need to fight it even harder. I am very committed and determined to lead this battle," he added.

Meanwhile, Vučić reiterated that Serbia's full membership in the European Union remains his top priority. "Until I leave this post, Serbia will remain committed to the path towards the EU, implementing the necessary reforms. We will gain a lot by joining the bloc. And it's not just about the economy... but also long-term stability, security and defense," he said.

Asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin, Vučić said that the relationship between them remains friendly and, according to him, the Russian leader is open to ending the war in Ukraine with a peace agreement.
