US tariffs on India come into effect - Taxes on imports of Indian goods double
United States President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on goods from India to 50% and they went into effect, escalating tensions between the two strategic partners.
A punitive 25% tariff imposed on Russian oil purchases comes on top of the existing 25% tariff on many products from India. That brings the total duties to 50% on goods such as clothing, jewelry, footwear, sports equipment, furniture and chemicals. The measures are among the highest imposed by the US and on a par with those imposed by Brazil and China. The new tariffs threaten thousands of small exporters and jobs, including in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat.
India's commerce ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, a ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said exporters affected by the tariffs will receive financial assistance and will diversify their markets to China, Latin America and the Middle East.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection notice to shippers provides a three-week exemption for Indian goods that were loaded onto ships and are in transit to the U.S. before the deadline. These goods can still enter the U.S. at the lower tariff rates until September 17.
Also excluded are steel, aluminum and their derivative products, passenger vehicles, copper and other goods that are subject to special tariffs of up to 50% under the National Security Trade Act.
Indian Commerce Ministry officials say the average tariff on imports from the US is around 7.5%. On the other hand, the US Commerce Department has highlighted taxes of up to 100% on vehicles and an average tariff rate of 39% on US agricultural products.
