Low taxes or public services/ Which are preferred more by European citizens?

Would you pay more taxes for better public services or accept poorer services in exchange for lower contributions? European citizens are divided, but more people support tax cuts.

Four in ten EU citizens (39%) agree that "taxes are too high and they would prefer them to be lower, even if this means poorer public services". These services include healthcare, education and public infrastructure. "The economic difficulties in Europe at the moment may explain this decline in support for higher taxes," the analysts say.

On the other hand, more than a quarter (27%) of citizens in the EU support “paying higher taxes for better public services”. A similar percentage (26%) support the current level of taxes and public services. Meanwhile, 8% of respondents are unsure.

Slovakia (59%), Croatia (57%), Estonia (53%) and Slovenia (50%) top the list of countries that propose that taxes are too high and should be reduced, even if this affects the quality of public services. High support for tax cuts is also observed in Greece and Romania (48%). According to experts, people usually oppose tax increases if they do not trust the government and fear that the additional funds will be misused by public officials.

Nordic countries such as Finland (22%), Sweden (24%) and Denmark (26%) show the lowest support for reducing taxes at the expense of public services, with only one in four people willing to support this idea.

In general, Eastern and Central European countries are more inclined to cut taxes in exchange for poorer services. Meanwhile, Northern and Western European countries are less willing to sacrifice public services.
