Spain breaks tourism records - But one in three Spaniards can't afford a vacation
Spain is set to break new records in tourism this summer, but one in three residents cannot afford to spend a week away from home on holiday. Between June and September, the country is expected to welcome around 43 million foreign tourists, 6% more than in the same period in 2025, with spending close to 64 billion euros, according to forecasts by Turespaña, the agency under the Ministry of Industry and Tourism.
The contrast is highlighted by the 2025 Living Conditions Survey by the National Institute of Statistics (INE): 32.2% of the population could not afford to leave home on vacation for at least one week a year. Although the percentage fell by 1.2 points compared to 2024, taking a vacation remains impossible for a significant portion of Spanish families.
Experts warn that this situation cannot be explained solely by the rising cost of travel. "The fact that one in three Spaniards cannot go on holiday this summer is not an isolated event, but a reflection of an economic reality observed for years," they say.
According to the organization's holiday survey, 27% of Spaniards say they will not go on holiday and another 8% still do not know if they will be able to, something seen as "a clear sign of the economic uncertainty that many families are experiencing".
Housing, food and services continue to absorb a large portion of household income. According to the data, 45% of households have difficulty covering housing-related costs, including rent, mortgage payments and bills such as electricity, gas and water. The situation is even more complicated for those living in rented accommodation: almost one in two tenants has difficulty paying their rent.
Food is also putting pressure on family finances. About 42% of families have problems affording food purchases, especially staples like meat and fish. In addition, there are other daily expenses: 48% find it difficult to cover vehicle costs, 46% to pay for dental care, and 36% to pay energy bills.
