Gift-giving season is approaching - Which European country spends the most on

With Christmas approaching and gift-buying on the rise, Germany is expected to become the biggest spender in the European Union during the festive season, according to data platform Statista.

In 2025, retail spending during the holiday season is expected to reach around 85.24 billion euros in Germany.

In second place is France, expected to spend around €71.65 billion, followed by Italy with over €43 billion. Counting all European countries, the United Kingdom leads the rankings, with growth forecast at around 3.5% by 2024, although the start of festive trade was slow.

However, this year's gifts may be more expensive, as annual inflation in the eurozone was estimated at 2.2% in November 2025, up from 2.1% a month earlier.

"According to our forecasts, holiday spending is expected to reflect a cautious approach, characterized by price sensitivity and a preference for affordable pleasures," the Mastercard Economics Institute said.

Cosmetics, clothing and electronics are among the most popular gifts during the holiday season, according to the economic institute.

In the last quarter of 2024, Czech citizens spent more on cosmetic products, while Poles preferred jewelry and watches.

Meanwhile, Spaniards invested more in second-hand products, while Italians invested more in home appliances. Czechs also spent more on games and toys than all other Europeans.
