Social media ban for under 15s - Danish government ready to make decision.

Denmark will ban the use of social media for children under the age of 15, the Danish government said, although parents will be allowed to grant exemptions for youngsters up to the age of 13 to access certain platforms.

The move comes after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called in her opening speech to parliament last month for social media restrictions for children due to concerns over young people's mental health.

Digitalization Minister Caroline Stage Olsen said the agreement was a 14-point plan on how to better protect minors online.

Most parties in parliament said they would support the plan before a formal vote.

The most used platforms by children in Denmark include Snapchat, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, the government said.

According to an analysis by the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority from February this year, young people in the Nordic country spend an average of 2 hours and 40 minutes each day on social media.

Denmark follows the example of Australia, which last year imposed a social media ban on children under 16.
