Macron appoints the ally and leader of the centrist bloc, François Bayrou

François Bayrou, a centrist and staunch ally of President Emmanuel Macron, was named France's new Prime Minister on Friday afternoon.

The announcement came after the French leader and Bayrou spoke for nearly two hours at the Elysée Palace on Friday morning.

The leader of the Democratic Movement Party (MODEM) is also somewhat popular with some National Rally (RN) MPs, but still lacks unanimous support from members of other parties.

"If this hypothesis is confirmed (François Bayrou), we will give him a chance, as we did with Michel Barnier," said Philippe Ballard, a right-wing lawmaker.

However, the hard-left France Unconquered Party (LFI) has said it will propose a no-confidence vote against Macron's re-election.

Former Prime Minister Michel Barnier was ousted in a no-confidence vote in Parliament on December 4 after he tried to force approval of next year's social security budget plan without a vote by MPs.

Yesterday, Macron traveled to Poland but cut the visit short in an apparent bid to wrap up the meeting after missing a promised 48-hour deadline he told party leaders on Tuesday.

The new cabinet will be unveiled in the coming days. The challenge now for Bayrou will be to form a government that will not be overthrown by the deputies.

The new prime minister and his cabinet will have the daunting task of passing the nation's 2025 budget plan in a divided lower house.

The current parliament is divided into three separate blocs without a clear majority after Macron called for early elections in the summer.
