Britain 'cuts' civil service - Plans to cut over 10,000 civil service

UK ministers are planning to cut more than 10,000 civil service jobs in a bid to boost government efficiency.

Multiple sources told The Guardian that the civil service had become too large and underpowered after being stretched by the demands of Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves had ordered departments to make 5% cuts to their budgets as part of a spending review, so inside sources have stressed that job cuts would be inevitable.

A Cabinet Office source said departments would have to make some "very difficult choices" about staffing levels if they were to stay within budgets set by the Treasury.

There are currently 513,000 full-time civil servants in central government, up significantly from 380,000 in 2016.

Over the summer, the New Labor government abandoned the Tories' target of cutting 66,000 roles in the civil service, but now wants to make a reduced cut.

Alongside the spending review in June, the first strategic workforce plan for the civil service will be published, looking at the size and shape of Whitehall and whether it is fit for modern government.

The public service consisted of around 490,000 people when Gordon Brown left office in 2010 and has since been cut to around 380,000 after years of David Cameron and George Osborne's "tightening" in Whitehall.

However, the sector grew steadily during Brexit and the pandemic to reach its current level of 513,000 positions. Last year it increased by approximately 5%.
