The health impact of Europeans' long-term exposure to the three main air pollutants (particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ozone) is improving, according to new figures published by the European Environment Agency (EEA).

Despite this, Europeans remain exposed to concentrations of air pollutants well above World Health Organization (WHO) recommended levels, with nearly 240,000 deaths each year resulting from this phenomenon. Also, a separate report shows that nearly 75 percent of Europe's ecosystems are exposed to harmful levels of air pollution.

For Europeans, air pollution is the main risk to environmental health, causing chronic disease and death, especially in urban areas.

The Environment Agency data comes as the revised EU Air Quality Directive has just come into force with a 2030 target for new air quality standards in line with WHO recommendations.

In addition to premature deaths, the impacts of living with air pollution-related illnesses are significant. The agency says it is vital that these impacts are taken into account when assessing the overall health burden of air pollution, as well as the benefits that will arise from cleaner air in Europe.

According to the data, at least 239,000 deaths in the EU are attributed to exposure to fine particle pollution above WHO recommended levels. That's a 45 percent drop from 2005, putting the bloc on track toward the 55 percent reduction target set out in the 2030 action plan.

These particles consist of a mixture of solids and liquid droplets. They can be emitted directly or formed when pollutants from different sources react in the atmosphere.
