Greece's travel sector "booming" - Reaches over 18 billion euros

The Greek travel services sector recorded a surplus of 18.79 billion euros in 2024, an increase of 3.4% from the previous year, according to final data published by the Bank of Greece.

In 2024, travel revenues grew by 4.8% per year, to €21.59 billion, driven by a 12.8% expansion in non-resident inbound travelers and a 2.9% increase in average spending per day stay.

Income from residents of the European Union, which accounted for 55.4% of the total, rose by 7.1% to 11.97 billion euros, with Germany and Italy being the main contributors.

On the other hand, profits from France and Britain, a non-EU country, decreased by 11.6% and 4.1% respectively.

In 2024, the number of incoming travelers to Greece reached 40.7 million, a 12.8% increase from the previous year, with the flow coming mainly through airports and road border crossings, the Bank of Greece said.

The cruise tourism sector also had a strong performance, with total revenue from cruise passengers expanding by 22.4% year-on-year, to €1.11 billion.

Despite these positive trends, the data showed that in 2024 average travel spending fell by 7.0% compared to 2023, while the average length of stay shrank by 9.6%.
