Croatia, Milanovic wins the elections - the current President received 75% of the votes in the runoff
Incumbent Zoran Milanovic convincingly won the presidential runoff in Croatia, defeating rival Dragan Primorac by a wide margin, according to the Croatian State Election Commission.
According to official data, Milanovic collected 74.68 percent of the vote, leaving Primorac far behind with only 25 percent.
The president thanked the citizens, saying the victory reflected the appreciation of his leadership over the past five years and served as a warning to the government of the Croatian Democratic Union.
"The government bears the highest responsibility for this country. And I am calling on them to listen to this message that the Croatian citizens are sending them today. I do not consider this as support for me, since no one gets 75 percent of the vote. This is momentary and shows the dissatisfaction of the citizens", said Milanovic.
The first round of the Croatian presidential election was held on 29 December 2024, but none of the eight candidates received a majority of votes. The two main candidates, Milanovic with 49.09 percent of the votes and Primorac with 19.35 percent, passed to the second round.
Milanovic's victory was not a surprise, not even for his opponent. Before Sunday's runoff, recent polls had predicted Milanovic's victory, with 62.5 percent of respondents expressing support for him, compared to 27.8 percent for Primorac.
Croatia has more than 3.7 million legal voters and the runoff turnout was about 44.15 percent, according to official data. The Croatian president serves a five-year term and can seek re-election only once.
