"Wind power in Europe, insufficient" - Makes up 20% of total

Wind power provided 20% of electricity consumed in Europe last year, but the capacity built during the year was less than half of what is needed to meet the European Union's 2030 energy and climate targets, according to the group of the WindEurope industry.

Wind has been a growing electricity generation sector in Europe for more than 20 years. The European Union wants it to grow much more to fight climate change and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Europe built 15 gigawatts (GW) of new wind power last year, including 13 GW offshore and about 2 GW onshore, according to WindEurope data.

European Union countries accounted for 13 GW of this capacity, but to meet climate targets in 2030, the bloc needs to build 30 GW a year of new farms.

The EU wants wind power to account for 34% of electricity consumed by 2030 and more than 50% by 2050.

The global offshore wind industry has struggled due to infrastructure, delayed permits and higher component costs. Offshore wind investments have declined in Europe and it is challenging for companies to make final investment decisions, according to WindEurope.

"Europe is not building enough new wind farms for 3 main reasons. First, most governments are not implementing the EU's favorable permitting rules. The second reason is related to delays in new grid connections," analysts explain.
