Chaos at Catania airport: Etna erupts, hundreds of cancellations and diversions
The activity of the Etna volcano in Italy has caused major problems for air traffic in Sicily, affecting around 700 flights at Catania airport.
According to data from SAC, the company that manages the airport, around 400 departing flights have been canceled, while another 52 are expected to be canceled today.
Due to the situation created by the volcanic activity, more than 250 flights have been reorganized or diverted to other airports in Sicily. Over 100 of them have been diverted to Comiso airport since the start of the emergency.
Meanwhile, yesterday alone, around 50 flights were diverted to Palermo and 22 others to Trapani airport.
The situation has caused difficulties for travelers, who have faced cancellations, schedule changes, and flight diversions.
Authorities continue to monitor Etna's activity and its impact on air traffic, while other Sicilian airports are being used to manage diverted flights.
