Italy extends fuel excise tax reduction - Government decision, until May 1, 1 liter will cost 24.4 cents less

Italy's fuel excise tax cut, approved on March 18 to control prices, ends on April 7. Meanwhile, the government on Friday extended the 24.4 cent/liter cut until May 1. The Ministry of Economy and Finance has been working to find funding: the measure is expected to cost at least 500 million euros, 30 million euros of which will be allocated to support agricultural businesses. Approximately 200 million euros will come from VAT revenues generated through the mobile excise mechanism, while the remaining 300 million euros are expected to come from the "freezing" of CO2 auctions.
"We have just approved the legal decree, which extends the excise duty reductions until May 1. In addition, there is a targeted intervention for agricultural businesses, extending the tax reductions already approved for fishing. The decree also includes the agreement with the trade associations transition 5.0", confirmed Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti in a brief press conference.
Regarding the possibility of exceeding the 3% deficit limit due to the energy crisis after the war in Iran, the Minister of Economy explained: "I believe that this refers to the willingness to request, or not, the exemption clause provided for by the new European regulation on economic governance. It is clear that a discussion at the European level will be inevitable if the situation does not change. I expressed this assessment at the beginning of the conflict and reiterated it to the Eurogroup at the beginning of this week. I will do this at every international consensus meeting I participate in, because this is the reality."
