Italy, the world's leading apple exporter - Accounts for 16% of global

Italy has become the world's leading apple exporter, surpassing the United States and China. According to data, the 2025/26 season has started well and the partial reopening of the Suez Canal is an encouraging sign for the continuation of apple trade.

Apples remain the fruit and vegetable product with the best Italian trade balance, thanks to exports totaling almost 1.2 billion euros, representing a share of 16% of global exports. They are followed by the United States (14%) and China (13%), followed by New Zealand, Chile, South Africa, etc. Globally, international apple trade is estimated at around 7 million tons, with a total value of over 7 billion euros.

According to the latest estimates from WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association), European apple production for the 2025/26 season should be just under 11 million tonnes, marking a 5% increase compared to forecasts published in August.

Regarding imports, Italy purchased 28.4 million kg of apples in the 2024/25 agricultural season, a value in line with the last three years and an increase of 9% compared to the previous year. The average price was influenced by the dynamics of the global market, increasing by around 3 cents per kg compared to the previous year, reaching €0.96/kg.

According to ISTAT data, in recent years, the area planted with apples in Italy is around 54,000 hectares, with a strong concentration in the provinces of Bolzano and Trento, which represent 49% of total national production.

From a varietal perspective, Golden Delicious remains the most represented cultivar, followed by the Gala group and the Granny Smith, Fuji and Red Delicious trio. The total supply of new varieties has exceeded 300,000 tonnes.
