US investors discuss gas pipeline - Southern Interconnection will connect Bosnia with Croatian terminal

Executives of the American company "AAFS Infrastructure and Energy LLC" were recently in Sarajevo to discuss with local leaders the role of American capital and resources in the development and management of the Southern Interconnection pipeline.
The Southern Interconnector is a gas pipeline that will connect Bosnia and Herzegovina with the Croatian gas system and the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the Croatian island of Krk.
Bosnia does not produce gas, so it is supplied with Russian gas that comes via the TurkStream through Serbia, through the only gas pipeline from Zvornik to Sarajevo, which was built 40 years ago.
So far, pipelines in Southeast Europe have been built by European or local companies. The section passing through Bosnia will be about 170 kilometers long and the estimated construction cost is between 405 and 810 million euros.
The project would be implemented under a concession model, with a private American investor financing, building and operating the pipeline for a specified period, after which it would be returned to Bosnia. To begin work, the Federation of Bosnia would need to grant a concession to the investor. Bosnia and Croatia would also need to sign an international implementation agreement.
According to plans, the documentation could be completed by the fall of 2026, after which construction could begin.
But how is Bosnia and Herzegovina supplied with gas?
Bulgaria has announced that it may stop transporting Russian gas in 2028. In such a scenario, Bosnia, without an alternative route, could be left without gas for industry, and families in Sarajevo without heating. During 2024, Bosnia imported about 225 million cubic meters of gas. Republika Srpska consumes about 30 million cubic meters, and the Federation of Bosnia the rest.
