China, record trade surplus - About 1.2 trillion dollars, despite Trump tariffs

China reported strong export growth in 2025 with a record surplus of nearly $1.2 trillion, as manufacturers braced for another three years under the influence of a Trump administration that would slow production by shifting American orders to other markets.

Beijing's resistance to tariff tensions since President Donald Trump returned to the White House last January has encouraged Chinese firms to shift their focus to Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America to offset US obligations.

As Beijing looks to exports to counter a prolonged property market downturn and sluggish domestic demand, the record surplus risks further unsettling economies concerned about China's trade practices and overcapacity, as well as their over-reliance on key Chinese products.

The annual manufacturing trade surplus reached $1.189 trillion, a figure equal to the GDP of a top-20 economy globally like Saudi Arabia, customs data showed, breaking the trillion-dollar ceiling for the first time in November.

"The growth momentum of global trade remains insufficient, and the external environment for China's foreign trade development remains severe and complex," said Wang Jun, vice minister at the China Customs Administration.

According to him, with increasingly diversified trading partners, China's ability to withstand risks has significantly increased, as the foundations for foreign trade remain strong.
