The first hydrogen plant opens in Denmark - The project aims to reach 12 MW

Danish company European Energy inaugurated the country's first large-scale green hydrogen production plant. The renewables developer is also present in Southeast Europe.

The green hydrogen unit is near Esbjerg, the fifth largest city in Denmark. Construction was completed in June and the first electrolyser, delivered by the Danish company Stiesdal, is already in operation.

European Energy said the plant would supply hydrogen to the Port of Esbjerg and a major customer in the industrial gases sector.

The company plans to expand the facility with two additional electrolysers. The second is expected to be installed in 2025. When all three electrolyzers are operational, the plant will have a total capacity of 12 MW and an estimated annual production of 1,500 tons of hydrogen.

"With the start of operations, we can deliver green hydrogen to the market. This achievement shows that the transformation of our energy systems is not just a distant vision, but is happening right now", said the CEO of European Energy.

The company has signed a balancing and optimization agreement with Centrica Energy, which will operate the wind farm located on the same site as the facility.

The green hydrogen-producing electrolyzers will be powered by two wind turbines at the test center, which was also created by European Energy and has a capacity of 16 MW. The excess heat generated by the hydrogen production process will be used by DIN Forsyning, the local district heating system operator, contributing to the decarbonisation of the city.
