268 million euros for energy conservation - Bulgaria finances green projects

The Bulgarian government will provide 268 million euros in state aid to developers of 249 projects for green plants with energy storage units.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Energy said it completed two rounds of funding under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The programs have a total value of 273 million euros, of which the beneficiaries receive 268 million.

In particular, support was approved for the energy storage component, for megawatts of operational power. In total, the funds cover 3.1 GW in generation with 1.18 GW in storage.

No beneficiary can receive more than one third of the amount and more than 50% of the eligible costs. The deadlines are extremely tight, as the projects must be completed by the end of March 2026.

The National Recovery and Resilience Plan is funded through the European Union Recovery and Resilience Institution.

One call was for solar and wind projects of 200 kW to 2 MW each. The goal is to add 200 MW in total, with at least 100 MW of battery energy storage. The Ministry approved the 55 million euros it had available.

The other tender, for renewable electricity projects of at least 200 kW, was intended for large enterprises. The government previously said it needs at least 940MW of capacity, with a minimum of 200MW total in operating battery power.

The scope was significantly exceeded, reaching 2.66 GW and 1 GW, respectively. The ministry evaluated 70 proposals, of which 65 met the conditions for a total of 214 million euros of state aid.

According to official sources, the two programs aim to rapidly deploy permanent capacities of renewable resources, overcome grid congestion and balance the energy system.
