1.6 million euros for the new bridge of Viroi in Gjirokastër - Works start with WB funds, lane width 2 x 3.5 m
Work has started on the construction of the Viroi bridge in Gjirokastër with the funds of the World Bank. 1.6 million euros will be used for this project and for the transition from a road of category C to C2 with a lane width of 2x 3.5 meters.
This new facility will guarantee security that there will be no flooding from floodwaters on days with high rainfall intensity.
The existing bridge that connects Tepelena with Gjirokastra and Kakavije has been blocked quite a few times as a result of the outflow from the bed of Lake Virua and the Drino River.
The Deputy Prime Minister, at the same time Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku in the Committee for Economy and Finance said that the bridges that had the most difficult conditions have been addressed.
The implementation project makes the entire track pass parallel to the existing road, on its eastern side (from the Drino river side), leaving the existing bridge in operation as a panoramic promenade around the lake.
This bridge will also have an impact on tourism, as visitors will have the opportunity to see Viroi Park more easily, which is one of the most unique in the south of the country.
For the national road network, it is expected that about 80 priority bridges with a traffic flow of 100 to 2500 vehicles per day and culverts under the road will require intervention.
