The EU starts work on the next generation warship project for the 2040s!

Could a European warship of the future soon see the light of day?

Euronaval, one of Europe's largest naval warfare trade shows, held this week in Paris, ended with hopes for stronger pan-European cooperation in the naval defense industry.

The European Defense Agency said that member countries have started working on the idea of building a next-generation warship for the 2040s.

Ongoing conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and US President Donald Trump's promise to reduce military support to the EU have led many to believe that it is time for Europe to prioritize its defense sovereignty.

"Everyone knows that Europe is a large entity capable of ambitious programs," said Hugues d'Argentré, the director of Euronaval.

"If we want to be at the level of China, the US and India, we can't be fragmented. We can't have Spain doing their own programs, or Italy and France working alone if we want to have a European navy .that can fulfill the requirements of the future of war".

"We all dream of a European frigate as a joint project. Many countries have tried to start the project but it never worked. We hope that one day we will achieve this," he said.

After initial talks this summer, one of the demands put forward by member states is for the future ship to be a 'smart ship', one that incorporates technologies such as artificial intelligence.

An idea that has been warmly welcomed by the union representing the French maritime industry.

"All this is a good sign that we can further increase our cooperation at the European level," said Jean-Marie Dumon, deputy general of GICAN, the trade association representing more than 250 French companies in the maritime sector.

"But there must be a willingness on the part of the member countries to place orders. This is what motivates us also to be able to offer them the maritime resources to ensure their sovereignty with a European dimension and within a framework of NATO," he said.

The bloc's defense ministers will meet in Brussels on November 19 to discuss the project and sign a letter of intent.
