Greece "distributes" gas to Europe - Greek pipeline ready to double supplies from Azerbaijan

The Greek natural gas transmission system is now fully prepared to receive and transmit twice the current amount of gas from Azerbaijan to Europe, as the main branch of the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) passes through Greek territory.
The Greek gas network operator, DESFA, has completed projects to improve and strengthen the national infrastructure, while the plenary session of the National Gas Regulatory Authority is expected to approve the relevant certification. This step will officially pave the way for the doubling of TAP's capacity from 10 billion cubic meters to 20 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
The expansion comes at a key moment for Europe, which is trying to replace Russian energy sources before 2027. This role has already been strengthened by liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacities at the Revithoussa terminal and the Alexandroupolis unit.
In the future, Greece is also expected to play a key role in delivering gas to the Western Balkans and Eastern European countries through new energy corridors. With the start of operation of the “Vertical Corridor”, LNG from both terminals is expected to reach Ukraine, further strengthening energy security in a region affected by conflict and insecurity.
According to data published by DESFA for the period January-September, LNG cargoes at Revithoussa have more than doubled, while exports have increased significantly, from just 0.66 terawatt hours (TWh) last year to 5.06 TWh this year.
Experts estimate that investments in Greek energy infrastructure will also positively impact the economic and geopolitical stability of the region.
