Greece, a net exporter of energy in 2024 - Renewable sources, hydropower plants

Greece was a net exporter of energy in 2024, with green sources covering more than half of the total generated. While energy demand increased after being reduced for two consecutive years.

Greece was a net energy exporter in 2024, for the second time since 1990, while renewable sources and large hydropower plants covered just over half of the country's demand (50.2%).

Electricity demand rose by 5.5% compared to 2023, after two consecutive years of decline, according to a study by Green Tank, with fossil gas growing more than renewable energy sources in the period 2023-2024.

At 25,269 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2024, renewables, excluding large hydropower, ranked first in electricity generation, but they lagged behind the combined production of the three fossil fuels (fossil gas, lignite and oil). This is in contrast to the data up until the first half of 2024, when renewables surpassed fossil fuels in total generation. The reversal in the second half was mainly due to the increased contribution of gas.

Fossil gas ranked second with 21,343 GWh, close to the historic level of 2021 and 35.9% more compared to 2023. Meanwhile, the growth trend of green resources reached 19.8%, after two years of continuous decline.

Oil is in third place, with a relatively small margin from large hydropower plants. While lignite ranked fifth with 3,236 GWh, reaching a record low in 2024.

Last year, net exports reached 307 GWh. Since 1990, this has only happened once before, in 2000 with just 11 GWh.
