Germany, increasingly "green" - Generates two-thirds of public energy

Nearly two-thirds of all electricity supplied to Germany's public grid between July and September 2025 came from renewable sources, according to preliminary data from the statistical office Destatis.

At 98.3 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), wind turbines, solar panels and other renewable sources contributed 64.1 percent to the energy mix, up from 63.5 percent in the same period last year. Generation from renewable sources expanded by three percent compared to the third quarter of 2024, while total electricity grew by two percent.

The steady expansion of renewables brought record levels of generation in the third quarter. Wind power grew by more than ten percent compared to the third quarter of 2024, reaching 26.8% of the total, while solar power expanded by 3.2 percentage points, to 24.1% of the mix.

The share of coal in the domestic energy mix reached 20.6 percent, while natural gas contributed 12 percent.

The amount of energy imported into Germany fell in the third quarter to 20.7 billion kWh, almost 12 percent less than a year earlier. Meanwhile, exports rose by almost 6 percent to 12.5 billion kWh.

Renewable sources such as wind and solar are set to become the backbone of the country's energy system. Together with other green sources, they already provide more than half of its total energy each year. Thanks to their development, Germany is on track to meet its 2030 target of reducing emissions by 65 percent compared to 1990 levels.

The country's objective is to provide 80 percent of total energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030.
