Europe officially postpones ETIAS travel permit - Expected to launch in 2027. Technical problems cause uncertainty

Europe’s long-delayed visa-free travel has hit another hurdle, with the European Union now indefinitely postponing the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The system, which will eventually require travelers from countries like the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia to apply for advance travel authorization, was previously expected to launch in 2027. Now, even that timeline is uncertain, as technical issues with Europe’s new border system continue to cause uncertainty.
For travelers, the message is simple for now: do not apply and do not pay anyone claiming to offer ETIAS applications. Last month, The Financial Times reported that the scheme could be postponed, and on its website, the EU made the decision official, writing: “ETIAS is currently not operational and no applications for travel authorisations are being collected at this point.” “The European Union will communicate the specific date for the launch of ETIAS several months before its launch,” the statement added.
The move comes after chaos over Europe's new electronic entry/exit system (EES), with passengers facing long queues at airports and missing flights during the busy summer holiday season. The scheme was originally due to start in 2022 but has faced widespread opposition.
When ETIAS is finally launched, it will cost 20 euros and grant access to 30 European countries in the Schengen Area, as well as Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Children under 18, adults over 70 and some family members of EU citizens will reportedly be exempt from the fees.
It will be valid for three years or until your passport expires, and will allow its holders to stay in the Zone for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
Based on the US ESTA program, which has been in operation since 2008, applicants will have to fill out an online form and provide personal information. They will also have to answer security questions and undergo pre-travel screening, with most applications expected to be approved within minutes.
