"Solar energy will surpass hydroelectric power plants by 2040" -

Croatia is among the top EU countries in the use of renewable energy and by 2040, solar energy is expected to surpass hydropower, according to the head of the country's Energy Institute.

According to the data, only Austria, Sweden, Denmark and Portugal have a higher share of renewable sources in electricity consumption in the European Union. The EU average is 45.3%, while Croatia records 58.8%, according to an analysis published by the Hrvoje Požar Energy Institute (EIHP).

Croatia has a higher percentage than countries like Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, while Italy, France and Hungary rank even lower, below the EU average.

The country is also well positioned in the heating and cooling sector, but ranks low in the use of green energy in transport. The average share of renewable energy in the heating and cooling sector in the EU is 26.2%, compared to 36.2% in Croatia.

In terms of domestic transport, it has a share of 0.9%. The EU average is 10.8%. Sweden (33%) and Finland (22%) topped the list.

Croatia aims to achieve a share of renewable sources of 78.7% in energy consumption, 42.5% in direct consumption and 24.6% in transport.

The government warned that 33.8 billion euros are needed to achieve the set energy targets across all sectors and currently only 10.8 billion euros are available.
