"Nuclear energy will return in 2027" - Italy prepares plan for

Italy aims to finalize by the end of 2027 a plan allowing the use of nuclear energy, after it was banned almost 40 years ago, Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said.

The right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has said that small modular reactors and advanced modular reactors could help decarbonize Italy's most polluting industries, including steel, glass and tile production.

Nuclear power plants have been banned in Italy following referendums in 1987 and 2011, but the government is now drafting rules to lift the ban through the use of new technologies in the sector.

"Italy is ready to bring back nuclear energy, a decisive choice that will not replace renewable sources but will complement them, ensuring a balanced and sustainable energy mix," Pichetto Fratin said, adding that a first draft law will be presented for approval to the cabinet within the next two weeks.

The government estimates that it will save 17 billion euros in the cost of decarbonizing the economy by 2050 if nuclear energy accounts for at least 11% of the total.

Italy has retained key expertise in the nuclear sector. State-controlled company Enel operates nuclear power stations in Spain, and parent company Eni is investing in a project to develop a nuclear fusion reactor in the United States.
