Bulgarians divided over the euro - The single European currency is official from

As Bulgaria prepares to officially adopt the euro on January 1, public opinion remains divided on the implications of joining the single currency.

While some economists and professionals welcomed the move as a step towards deeper integration with the European Union, others warned of potential economic challenges for citizens. Prices in Sofia stores are now displayed in both Bulgarian lev and euros, as preparations for the transition in the New Year begin.

"First of all, this will further integrate our economy," said economist Stefan Lukov, who added that this was a last-ditch necessity after Bulgaria joined the EU. "At least our central bank will become a full member of the European Central Bank family and will have the right to participate in decision-making," he stressed.

However, not all Bulgarians share this belief. Evelina Blagojeva, a beautician from Sofia, was concerned. "I am against adopting the euro because I am afraid we will become poorer," she said.

Others said it was time for Bulgaria to integrate into the zone. "I think it's overdue because we should have adopted the euro a long time ago," said Ivan Tonchev, a banker.

Bulgaria has been trying for years to join the common currency, but its accession date has been postponed in part because it failed to meet some basic criteria, particularly inflation.

This time the country met the inflation criterion, as the 12-month rate was recorded at 2.7% in April, slightly below the reference value of 2.8%.
