2025 a record year for cryptocurrency thefts/ Hackers stole $2.7 billion in several attacks

The year 2025 has ended with an alarming record in the world of cryptocurrencies, as cybercriminals managed to steal around $2.7 billion in digital assets, the highest figure ever recorded by hacking attacks in this sector. The data has been confirmed by companies specializing in monitoring blockchain.
Over the year, dozens of attacks have hit cryptocurrency exchanges and decentralized finance (DeFi) projects, exposing serious vulnerabilities in the security of web3 platforms. The largest attack was recorded against Dubai-based exchange Bybit, where hackers managed to steal about $1.4 billion in crypto, making it the largest cryptocurrency theft in history.
According to blockchain analysis firms and US authorities, including the FBI, hackers linked to the North Korean government are behind this attack, who have for years been considered the most active and successful group in attacks on the crypto industry. The operation significantly surpassed previous records, including the 2022 thefts of the Ronin and Poly networks, which captured figures of $624 million and $611 million.
Similar estimates have been published by companies such as Chainalysis, TRM Labs, and De.Fi, which confirm that the total crypto stolen during 2025 reaches $2.7 billion, not including hundreds of thousands of dollars more lost from individual wallets.
Reports indicate that North Korea has been responsible for more than $2 billion in these thefts this year alone, while since 2017, hackers linked to Pyongyang are suspected of stealing around $6 billion in crypto, used to finance the country's nuclear program.
The trend of attacks does not seem to be slowing down. After $2.2 billion stolen in 2024 and $2 billion in 2023, the 2025 figures show that cybercrime remains one of the most serious threats to the global cryptocurrency industry.
