ECB unveils new banknote designs - Winner expected to be selected by the end of

The European Central Bank has revealed a shortlist of new banknote designs and expects to choose a winner by the end of the year in its bid to launch more secure money in the future.

The 10 selected designs, with themes around "European culture" and "Rivers and birds", will now be put to public debate. Europeans will have until 21 September to give their feedback," said ECB President Christine Lagarde.

The 10 euro banknote is dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven, accompanied by images of a music festival and a youth choir, as a symbol of the power of music to unite different peoples and generations.

The 20 euro banknote features Marie Curie, one of the most important scientists of all time, with a university or educational background, emphasizing the role of knowledge and scientific research in the progress of society.

The figure of Miguel de Cervantes adorns the 50 euro banknote, accompanied by a public library, a symbol of everyone's access to knowledge and literature.

The 100 euro banknote features Leonardo da Vinci, the iconic figure of the Renaissance, against a museum backdrop where children and adults coexist, highlighting the importance of cultural heritage and lifelong learning. Finally, the 200 euro banknote pays homage to Bertha von Suttner, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning writer and activist, who is depicted in front of a public square, a place of meeting, democratic dialogue and social cohesion.

The second theme follows a completely different logic. Instead of historical figures, the focus is on Europe's nature and environmental heritage. The banknotes depict the path of a river from its mountain sources to the sea, accompanied by characteristic bird species that live in the continent's various ecosystems.

The back of each banknote features the most important institutions of the European Union, such as the European Parliament, the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Council and the European Court of Auditors. The old banknotes will retain their value and will continue to circulate alongside the new series.
